Small and medium-sized businesses have historically struggled to offer branded gift card programmes due to the high cost, technical complexity, and operational overhead traditionally associated with such systems. Staff redemption heavily relied on paper-based vouchers or cumbersome manual processes—often relying on outdated spreadsheets. This inevitably led to fraud, tracking errors, and an agonizingly slow customer experience at the point of service.

Furthermore, businesses lacked a centralized way to run loyalty programmes, promotional campaigns, ticket sales, and gift card management from a single platform, forcing them to maintain multiple disconnected tools.

The Voucher Connect mobile app is purpose-built for staff at the point of service. It acts as the physical endpoint for the entire cloud ecosystem. The frontend architecture was specified to support an exhaustive suite of point-of-service features:

User Authentication

Secure login using individual staff accounts, ensuring every staff member maintains a traceable redemption history.

QR Code Scanning

Native camera integration to scan QR codes on physical and digital vouchers, offering instant recognition with no delay.

Manual Code Entry

A permanent fallback option for entering voucher codes manually when scanning is impossible (e.g., damaged QR code or hardware issues).

Balance Check

Instantly retrieves and displays the current remaining balance on a voucher, along with the precise purchase date and strict expiry date.

Full & Partial Redemption

Allows full value redemption or partial spending, retaining the remainder for future visits (configurable per voucher product type).

Voucher Top-Up / Load

Staff can load new value onto an existing voucher using a hybrid interface supporting both a scroll-based or keypad amount selector.

Redemption Confirmation

A mandatory clear confirmation screen shown after a successful redemption or top-up, displaying the new balance and transaction details.

Offline Resilience

Designed for environments where connectivity may be intermittent, utilizing graceful handling of connection drops with appropriate user feedback.

UX & The 30-Second Journey.

The application is designed around three core UX principles: Speed, Clarity, and Confidence. Every interaction is optimized to be completed by a busy member of staff with minimal training, under real-world conditions such as poor lighting, time pressure, and customer-facing service scenarios.

The interface avoids unnecessary complexity. Screens are focused on a single task, utilizing single-column layouts optimized for one-handed operation. The design relies on clean, modern sans-serif typography and outlined icons aligned to Material Design and SF Symbols conventions.

The Staff Redemption Journey (< 30 Seconds)

  • Step 1: Staff logs in using their individual user account credentials.
  • Step 2: Customer presents their voucher (digital on phone, printed, or physical card).
  • Step 3: Staff taps 'Scan' on the Redeem page. The native camera activates immediately.
  • Step 4: QR code is scanned (or code entered manually). Voucher details are retrieved and displayed instantly.
  • Step 5: Staff views remaining balance, expiry date, and purchase date.
  • Step 6: Staff enters the redemption amount and presses 'Redeem'.
  • Step 7: Confirmation is shown. The transaction is instantly stored in the central dashboard audit log.

The Staff Top-Up / Load Journey

  • Step 1: Staff navigates to the 'Load' page in the app.
  • Step 2: Staff scans the customer's voucher QR code or enters the code manually.
  • Step 3: Current balance is displayed (if any remaining value exists on the voucher).
  • Step 4: Staff enters the top-up amount using the scroll selector or keypad.
  • Step 5: Staff taps 'Top Up' and confirms the amount.
  • Step 6: Voucher is now validated for the new amount. Staff proceeds with payment collection via their POS.

The Global Ecosystem.

The mobile app (roughly 43.5 MB on Android) does not exist in a vacuum. It sits within a massive ecosystem managed through the web-based dashboard, which dictates what staff can process in the app. This ecosystem handles:

  • Prepaid Cards: Ready-to-use in-store payment cards that are fully trackable via the dashboard.
