Not Again

A comprehensive technical breakdown of a collaborative 2D animation short. The brief was to pitch and animate a 90-second short story about a man who cannot die at a house party. The workflow demanded rigorous synchronization across multiple artists, transitioning from structural Toon Boom animatics to a fully composited cinematic master.

The Final Compositing Pass.

While the primary animation was executed in Toon Boom, the final cinematic quality was achieved through tight compositing in Premiere Pro and After Effects. Stitching separate sequential files and layering complex effects required precise adherence to timing templates established during pre-visualization.

Architectural Timing.

Before any final sequential art was drawn or rigs bound, we established the kinetic foundation. This version one (V1) Toon Boom animatic dictated the spatial timing and transition logic necessary for a multi-animator workflow. Blocking out primary actions early mitigated pacing discrepancies later.

Production Execution.

A primary outcome of this project was identifying individual strengths and assigning team members to areas that matched their skills. This involved dividing responsibilities across scriptwriting, storyboarding, character design, animation, background creation, compositing, and visual/sound effects.

Background Design

Establishing the layout and perspective of the house party environment. Painted using Adobe Photoshop to maintain strict aesthetic continuity across the 90-second run time.

Character Animation

Testing z-depth constraints and character manipulations within Toon Boom to ensure rigs behaved predictably during the extreme, stylized motion sequences demanded by the narrative.

Production Artifacts.

A collection of sequential stills, un-composited animation cycles, and structural character blueprints extracted directly from the pipeline during the final weeks of production.
